A bidet – a seat containing a water bowl and used for cleaning one’s bottom and privates with water – dates back to at least Roman times. The first true bidets appeared in French bathrooms in the 16th century. There are 5 types of bidets – the stand-alone bidet, built-in bidet, bidet seats and bidet attachments, handheld bidet, and portable bidet. The bidet is considered more sanitary and efficient than a traditional toilet. The bidet cleans by flushing the area with water and waste is washed away with little risk of contact and no spread of germs. Some bidets offer adjustment of water flow and temperature control. The bidet also offers cost savings with the elimination of toilet paper. Learn more about bidet types and benefits.
